Bassetlaw open
This open tournament sponsored by the West Retford hotel was well attended by tennis enthusiasts from around the local area. The draw was made and it was decided that the teams would be split into two groups. The top two teams from each group would play a fsemi final, the top of group A would play second of group B and the of group B would play second in group A. It was fiercely contested in the group stage with Tom Bradley and Janet Cawley, winners of group A and John Hannah and Elaine Williams winners of group B.
Group A runners-up were Chris Williams and Jane Hart and second in group B were Neil and Linda Thorpe. the semi-finals were very close with Tom Bradley and Janet Cawley beating Neil and Linda Thorpe, and John Hannah and Elaine williams victorius over Chris Willaims and Jane Hart.
The final was also a vrey close match. John and Elaine took an early 4-0 lead and were playing excellent tennis, but Tom and Janet stuck in there and conquered their early nerves to level the match. Tom and Janet moved in front at 6-5. Both teams were playing excellent tennis at this stage and every point was fiercely contested. The small crowd of spectators were clapping every point at this stage and encouraging the players to take the match into a deciding tie break. they had there wish and Elaine held serve to take the match into a tie break.
The tie break was a tense affair with long rallies and great winning shots from both the teams. Tom and Janet edged in front and run out winers at 7-5 to take the tie break and the cup.
The cup was awarded by the mayor of Retford Bryn Jones and cheques for £25 to each player was handed over from a representative of the West Retford Hotel.
